PROJECT 1 : MUSICAL PERFORMANCE

(Daily Objects as musical Instrument)

For my class' first CTS assignment, we were all asked to perform on presentation day with our own respective groups. This is no ordinary performance though. It's a musical performance of us jamming to instruments made out of daily objects. There's a group task and also an individual task for this assignment.

For the individual task, I'm supposed to make an instrument out of a daily object, an Idea Journal, an Individual Instrument Development, as well as a poster for my music band. For my instrument, I used paper cups and produced "Maracas". Maracas are mostly used by Mexicans because it is one of their famous traditional instrument. What I did was I added a colour pencil through the base of the paper cup. Then, I added sunflower seeds into the cup. After that, I covered the top of the paper cup with a cut-out of the same diameter as paper cup's top. Since it looked a little dull and boring, I added a glitter foam sticker onto the surroundings of the paper cup. After that's done, I tried to shake my DIY maraca and to my surprise, it worked.

IDJ 1: Imagine yourself as an object (using the object from my DIY instrument)

For the group task, we are supposed to come up with a performance based on the genre we were given by the lecturers and it must be a performance that's 5-8 minutes long. Terms and conditions about this task is that we must perform with only our voices and the sounds produced by our daily objects. As for my group, we were given the genre "Movie Soundtrack Mix".

My groupmates & I came up with the group name Ten Ten Ten Ten because there's 10 us in the group, which goes by the name of :-

During the day of the performance, we gathered at LT11 as it was the venue for the performance. The judges were our lecturers which were Miss Sufina, Miss Iffa, & Miss Ida. My group mates and I wore black colored clothing as our attire's theme. Due to nervousness, we didn't really produce a performance we thought we could produce but then again we had fun performing and that is what all that matters.

Pharell Williams - Happy, from the movie Despicable Me 2.
Pink Panther Theme Song, from the movie Pink Panther.
Do-Re-Mi, from the movie The Sound Of Music.
The Cup Song, from the movie Pitch Perfect.

Our performance:

After this project ended, I finally came to realize that you don't exactly need actual instruments to create sounds to jam to. DIY instruments are way better as it's cheap and fit for a student like me who budgets on literally everything. Furthermore, I learned that when it comes to group work conflicts tend to happen. The only to handle it is to lower down the ego and apologize to cool down the negative vibe in the room. Besides that, this assignment also taught me to expand my creativity to another notch. In the words of Maya Angelou, "You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have". Although, my workmanship for my paper works such as my IDJ and my individual documentation could've been better. But because of my bad time management, a lot of my work had to be done in a rush hence the sort-of-poor-looking work. I shall take this as lesson that I should learn from and never repeat it again because rome was not built in a day.
