Progress #3

[21st May 2015]

After a lecture that we have gotten on the 19th of May by Miss Normah, I now have a more in-depth understanding on what layout designs are all about and what are they important.

So basically based on my understanding, page layout is the part of graphic design that deals in the arrangement of visual elements on a page. The purpose of compositioning the elements is to allow readers or viewers to achieve specific communication objectives. The photos attached above is an example of a good page layout and good composition of elements. A page layout should speak for itself, like what story is it trying to emphasize on and what mood is that page or photo trying to let the viewers feel.

The softwares that I used for making my coffee table book is Adobe Lightroom and Adobe InDesign. I'm using Lightroom to edit the photos for better clarity and better filters, hopefully. As for InDesign, I'm arranging and compositioning all 20 pages of my coffee table book by using this software. I downloaded an A5 template online as a guideline for my coffee table book.

The photo above is how I edited my photos. It shows the before and after effect of how I want my photo's outcome to be like. As you can see, the outcome is slightly emphasizing on the whites rather than anything else. Also I added the brightness but unsaturated the photo vibrancy a little bit, to let the viewers feel the vibe of the hard life of the workers working for a low-paid job. Most of my photos will turn out that way, depending on what is that photo trying to portray.

The photo above shows the A5 template that I will be following as a guide line to complete my coffee table book with the correct dimensions. For now I have not started on the pages for my coffee table book as I am still in the midst of eliminating the unwaned photos and only pick the good ones to be attached on the 20 pages.

I personally love magazine spreads that has a minimalistic touch to it and contains more black and white rather than any other colour. Hence, the layout theme for my magazine is going to be very minimalistic to make it easier for viewers to focus on the photos rather than the layout design. Although the layout design still plays a big role, it must not over power the focus of the photographs. If I manage to do it right, I might be able to have a coffee table book that is classy and good.
